Sentinel White Balance

Features: White Balance

Unless you’ve studied light or photography, this concept might seem a little foreign. Different light sources, such as an incandescent light bulb or the sun, produce different “color temperatures” when the light hits an object. The human eye does an excellent job at compensating for this effect, but cameras need some help. Without the use of a filter, and depending on the light source, a picture could have a distinctly orange or blue tint. See the example below.

Cameras with an automatic white balance, like the X10 Sentinel, usually have a range of light sources they can filter measured by color temperature. The range for the X10 Sentinel is 3200-9600 degrees K. Basically, that range covers anything from sunrise/sunset and daylight at the low end to cloudy and overcast skies in the upper end; Fluorescent lamps are somewhere in the middle. While this filter is essential for clear viewing, it can be slightly fooled if there is an overabundance of color temperatures without a baseline. For example, a field of pumpkins without any colors approaching white might have a slight tint as the automatic white balance attempts to compensate for the light sources.

Understanding Your Sentinel's White Balance Features

The Sentinel works in ATW (auto-tracking white balance) mode, sampling white color in the picture and adjusting the white balance according to the temperature range. FIX mode is also an option, allowing you to set the white balance manually. In addition to this, the Sentinel features zero color rolling, which means that even when recording under fluorescent light, you don’t have to worry about random colors tinting the picture, as in some older-model cameras. With the Sentinel, you’ll never get washed out bluish or pinkish images.
