Sentinel Optics and Lens

Optics and Lens

The picture you get from a Sentinel camera is not just good, it's fantastic! Thanks to pro-quality optics and a high-resolution CCD image sensor, you'll be guaranteed a crystal clear picture with brilliant color. And as you pan, tilt and zoom your Sentinel, the smart automatic focus and iris actively adjust everything so you see with all the brilliance and fine detail possible.

Our 22x optical zoom lens offers an f-number of 1.6 - 3.7, F=85.1mm.

What do these numbers mean for you?

f1.6 - 3.7: The f-number is the way that you measure the capability of a lens to collect light, also known as the focal ratio. It's the unit of measurement for the camera's aperture range, or the amount that the lens can open up or close down to let in more or less light. A good lens will collect more light and filter the concentrated ray to the CCD sensor; generally, the lower the f-number, the more light it collects and the better images you receive. An f-number of f1.6 - 3.7 means that the pupil diameter is equal to the focal length divided by 1.6 (in a brightly lit place) to 3.7 (in a dimly lit place); that is, if the camera has an 85.1mm lens (like the Sentinel), all the light that reaches the film passes through a circle that is 53.2 - 23 mm (85.1 mm/1.6 up to 85.1mm/3.7) in diameter, depending on the level of light reaching the camera.

F=3.7 - 85.1mm: F is the measurement of the focal length of the lens; the focal length is what determines a camera's angle of view. The Sentinel lens has a focal length of 3.7-85.1mm, which is a very wide range for a camera. This is easily explained, however: since the Sentinel can pan a full 280° and tilt up to 60°, the angle of view is not limited by the size of the lens, it's only limited by the pan and tilt range. Since the Sentinel is not limited in its field of view like most stationary cameras, it can't really be qualified as a telephoto or wide angle lens. The Sentinel's field of view is limited only by how far it can pan and tilt (a combined 330°), not the focal length of the lens itself.

We've equipped the Sentinel with the best lens so you can get exactly the picture you need to see. Since the Sentinel is a professional grade camera we made sure the pros could tweak all the settings manually, so the remote includes buttons for manual focus and iris adjustment. A host of other camera settings can be controlled using the onscreen menus as well; at X10, we provide everything you need for maximum convenience and total security.
