In Photometry, intensity of illumination is measured by lux, the International System unit of illumination equal to one lumen per square meter. In practical terms, this measurement says how much illumination is required for cameras to capture images.

The X10 Sentinel requires 1.5 lux. One lux is equivalent to moonlight while 400 lux is equivalent to office lighting or a clear sunrise. By that comparison we see that the amount of light that the X10 Sentinel requires is minimal. The Sentinel can also be put into starlight mode, which requires only .02 lux, and is ideal for nighttime scenes with low levels of motion, like perimeter surveillance or even use in astronomy.

If your situation requires more light, you may want to consider an X10 package that includes a motion sensor you can link to an existing light. A motion sensor could not only turn on a light, but also set a VCR to record using the X10 Video Commander. This is ideal for spaces which get more traffic, such as public areas and front doorsteps, where light is occasionally required but constant illumination isn't necessary.
