Effective pixels

There's a difference between the number of pixels used in a digital image and the number of sensor pixel measurements used to create that image. The effective number of pixels refers to the number of pixels actually used to create the output image. The total number of pixels includes the pixels surrounding the effective area (as in, for example, a 5 megapixel camera), which are used for demoisaicing the pixels on the edge, in order to determine color and so on.

The total number of pixels on the sensor is larger than the effective number of pixels that were used to produce that image. When shopping for a camera, it's important to note the difference between the effective number of pixels and the overall number of pixels. A high number of effective pixels means better quality pictures, every time.
